Il Pastaio, the youthful name for the restaurant now known as La Pastaia (the pasta maker) was opened in Los Gatos, CA in 1984 as a small 24 seat Caffe. It fast became a happening in the neighborhood, enjoying both patron loyalty and critical praise. The food then, as now, was fresh, seasonal and beautiful. One critic who became a friend of the restaurant over many years, said "I knew I was in the right place when I saw the chef, Margaret Abrahams (co-owner with John Ardizzone and Forrest Gingold ) reach for a piece of fresh nutmeg and grate it into a sauce."
In 1988 La Pastaia opened its second restaurant in Palo Alto and in 1990 moved into its current location in the newly restored, historic Hotel De Anza. The decor is a bold treat to the eye, with its vibrant, cadmium red walls dancing out between slate covered arches, and finished with antique, Italian travel posters. The owners and their staff share a deep respect and affection for the Italian life-style. The menu reflects that commitment, emphasizing seasonal, rustic cuisine drawn from the rich and varied regions of Italy.
